British composer Sir Edward Elgar was mad about football and penned the world's first documented soccer chant after a Wolverhampton Wanderers match a century ago, the Times reported yesterday.
"The revelation that Elgar composed the first football chant is a thunderclap that brings two great traditions together," the newspaper declared in an editorial written under the headline "Elgar rules, OK?"
The Times said the composer, whose Enigma Variations ranks as one of Britain's favourite classical compositions, was a fervent Wolves fan who attended several matches at the club's Molineux ground. He reportedly went to his first match in 1895.
