THE Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, one of the stars of Tainspotting, the controversial film about drug addicts, has landed his first Hollywood film role.

He will take the lead in Nightwatch opposite Nick Nolte. But there won't be much glamour in the part McGregor plays a morgue attendant.

McGregor (24) will receive half Nolte's reported fee of £1 million sterling for the film, which begins shooting in two weeks.

The Sun's publishers were fined £10,000 and a senior journalist was accused of "crass incompetence by a judge yesterday for a very serious" contempt of court.

Southwark Crown Court heard that an interview in the newspaper with snooker ace Ronnie O'Sullivan resulted in far reaching consequences for an obscenity trial involving the player's parents and several other defendants.

Judge Eugene Cotran said the story, headlined "Pot it there, Mum", quoted the 20 year old former British champion saying he would celebrate his mother's release from a year long prison sentence imposed for a £100,000 VAT evasion by keeping a snooker title.

He said the information about Maria O'Sullivan's criminal past had been made the subject of a contempt of court order and was deliberately kept from the jury so she could have a fair trial.

Earlier, the judge entered a formal not guilty verdict on Mrs O'Sullivan, who had pleaded not guilty to a charge of having obscene articles for publication for gain.

She left the court smiling.

A Belgian woman born 32 years ago on February 29th had her first baby on Thursday, the same date, the hospital said.
