Actress Helena Bonham Carter (30) yesterday broke her silence about her relationship with film director Kenneth Branagh, estranged husband of Emma Thompson. The elfin actress will star with Branagh in BBC's The Theory Of Flight.

As the pair worked together for the first time since Frankenstein, she admitted: "Yes, okay, of course we are together and it is very nice, thank you very much." They were recently pictured kissing in a London park.

Elton John has announced his first British tour for six years: "It will be great to be back on the road again after such a long break."

In December he will take a full-scale show to Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham and London. At present he is on holiday in the south of France.

Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo had ant eggs and worms for lunch at a restaurant serving pre-Colombian food.

Zedillo ate heartily at Chon's, a restaurant near the Zocalo, the city's historic centre where Spanish conquistadors tore down ancient Aztec temples to build their own capital.

Lunch included such pre-conquest delicacies as gusano de maguey or thick brown cactus worms, and escamoles or ant eggs, which he washed down with a bottle of beer.

President Nelson Mandela marked his 79th birthday with a quiet, family affair after returning from a high-profile east Asian visit.

Mr Mandela, who threw a festive party earlier this month for 900 children with potentially fatal diseases, celebrated his birthday quietly at his Pretoria residence with his partner, the former Mozambique first lady Graca Machel.
