Gardai at Irishtown in Dublin are investigating an incident in which petrol was poured into the home of Mr John Gormley, the Green party TD, and set alight. Garda forensic experts examining the the scene yesterday found that petrol from a plastic bottle was poured through the letterbox of Mr Gormley's house, where he lives with his wife, Penny, and their sixweek-old daughter, Ellen.

The incident occurred at about 10.45 p.m. on Monday. Mr Gormley, a former Lord Mayor of Dublin, was at home with his family at the time. He said that he was "baffled" by the incident and had no idea who might be responsible.
