Los Angeles - In California the race to the House of Representatives between the Democrats' Ms Jane Harman and the incumbent Republican, Mr Steve Kuykendall, is too close to call. The race in California's 36th District, a stretch of prime Golden State coastline near Los Angeles, is one of the tightest in the US and could be the key in the fight to control the House, where Republicans hold a seven-seat margin.

The high-stakes race between Ms Harman and Mr Kuykendall, who recent polls show are running dead even, has drawn the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, Mr Joseph Lieberman, to campaign for Ms Harman and Senator John McCain of Arizona, who lost the Republican primary to Mr Bush, to campaign for Mr Kuykendall.
