One politician very happy with the diktat that candidates' photos must be placed beside their names on the ballot paper for the European elections next June is Leinster FF MEP Jim Fitzsimons, and it's not because of his good looks. He appears on the paper as James John Fitzsimons and in the 1994 elections he estimates he lost more than 2,000 votes, through confusion, to constituency rival, Independent, Jack Fitzsimons. Connacht/Ulster's Pat The Cope Gallagher feels he also lost out, to Labour's Anne Gallagher. A picture would put an end to that.
