Santiago - Within hours of being directly implicated in a massacre, the former Chilean dictator, Gen Augusto Pinochet, was taken to the military hospital in Santiago yesterday suffering symptoms similar to a stroke. Gen Pinochet (85) was said to have temporarily blacked out and to be suffering from high blood pressure. The accusation was made on Thursday evening by retired Gen Joaquin Lagos Osorio, who commanded the third army division at the time of the 1973 coup which took Gen Pinochet to power. He described what he said was Gen Pinochet's role in the massacres carried out by the unit known as the "Caravan of Death" soon after the coup.
