An investigation is underway in Limerick after a pipe bomb was thrown into a halting site located on the outskirts of the city.

The device exploded in an unofficial halting site which is home to a number of families on the Ballysimon Rd last night.

No one was injured and none of the caravans were damaged. Residents in the halting site alerted gardaí after hearing a loud bang at about 9.50pm.

Explosive residue was discovered at the scene, which was sealed off for a technical examination.

The services of the Army Bomb disposal unit were not required, as the device had already detonated, according to a Garda spokesman.

“An pipe bomb of sorts was thrown into a clear concrete area and fortunately nobody was injured but it had the potential to cause injury,” he said.

While the location is not an official halting site it has been home to a number of traveller families for many years.
