A place has been found in a State remand centre for a troubled 15-year-old boy who spent two nights this week in a Dublin Garda station because no appropriate place was available for him.
The boy was arrested on Tuesday and brought before the Children's Court the following day on charges of robbery, false imprisonment and assault. He was remanded to Trinity House, a State detention centre for young offenders, but there was no place available. He was then detained at Store Street Garda station.
Following an application by Mr Peter Finlay SC, for the boy, the High Court ordered an inquiry into the legality of the child's detention at Store Street.
Yesterday Mr Justice Kearns was told a place was available for the boy at St Michael's remand and assessment centre in Dublin.
Ms Mary Ellen Ring, for the State, confirmed there was a remand bed in St Michael's until Thursday when there would be a bed available in Trinity House. The boy was detained in the Garda station simply in the context of his welfare and to allow inquiries to be made as to an alternative suitable place for him.
