Sinn Féin Transport policy:Sinn Féin has said it will abolish motorway and road tolls as part of its transport policy.

During the launch of the policy yesterday, the party also said it would lift the toll barriers on the M50 with immediate effect if elected to government, and would invest additional money in public transport along the road to ease congestion.

Launching the policy, Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe said serious traffic congestion along the M50 on Tuesday showed the need for additional transport measures to alleviate the M50.

He said such congestion was not confined to Dublin, but was a feature in many parts of the country. "There are a number of critical problems in relation to transport difficulties right across the State. These include poor planning, a lack of investment in public transport and insufficient rail capacity."

The party has also promised that it would introduce legislation making it mandatory for public transport provision to be factored into all large residential developments at an early planning stage.

Like other parties, Sinn Féin is also promising an additional 500 buses for Dublin Bus, and the prioritisation of a metro linking Dublin city centre to the airport and Swords.

An additional light rail line would also be constructed between Dublin city centre and Blanchardstown. New national rail links are also proposed.

However, unlike all other main parties, Sinn Féin is proposing to re-nationalise Aer Lingus, in addition to Irish Ferries.
