A passenger aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Northern Ireland last night minutes after taking off bound for Liverpool.

The Flybe aircraft with 55 passengers and crew on board had just left Belfast City Airport when the pilot identified a possible technical problem. The plane was diverted to Belfast International Airport where it landed safely.

A spokeswoman for the airport said their emergency services had stood by as the plane touched down.

The passengers were taken by bus the 25 miles back to the Belfast City Airport where it was understood Flybe were making arrangements for an alternative plane to get them to Liverpool.
