An Bord Pleanála has approved a holiday home development on Lough Currane in Co Kerry, despite objections from residents and the South Western Regional Fisheries Board who claimed it would cause pollution.
The board has ruled there is no pollution risk provided developers comply with conditions set down by it. The development cannot start until a planned Waterville sewage improvement scheme, due to be completed in 18 months, is operational.
Lough Currane is one of Europe's premier sea trout lakes and is also famous for its salmon and brown trout.
The fisheries board objected to the discharge into the lake of surface water from the proprietary treatment plant attached to the 26 holiday homes and an Bord Pleanála upheld this objection. It ruled that surface and storm waters should be disposed of via interceptors to soakways on site and no surface water should go directly into streams.
