A plaque commemorating the Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, was unveiled at the weekend by his great granddaughter at 35 Marlborough Road, Donnybrook, Dublin. The explorer lived at the house between 1880 and 1884 and the plaque is part of a series of specially commissioned pieces to be unveiled over the next two years highlighting Irish achievements in science, exploration and engineering.

The Honourable Alexandra Shackleton, the explorer's great-granddaughter and another descendant, Mr Jonathan Shackleton, attended the ceremony, which was organised by the National Committee for Science and Engineering Commemorative Plaques.

Sir Ernest Shackleton is most famous for his voyage to South Georgia in 1916. He died of a heart attack during a later expedition to South Georgia in January 1922.
