A dispute between management and unions at the Platin Cement plant in Drogheda could escalate by the end of the week after members of the ATGWU voted unaminously for strike action.

The ATGWU, which represents the majority of the workers at the plant, will hold a meeting with other unions at the plant (TEEU, SIPTU and Amicus) at their head offices this afternoon.

Mr George Conlan, Regional Industrial Organiser for the ATGWU, said the unions were meeting "to see if there's a way forward" in the dispute.

The dispute centres around pay and conditions at the plant.

According to an ATGWU spokesperson the 250 workers at the plants had requested improvements in the areas of pension-related overtime, VHI and bonuses.

The Construction Industry Federation (CIF) warned that strike action could have serious implications for the north-east region.
