Princes Holdings Ltd will invest £150 million on developing its MMDS networks and create an extra 800 jobs providing that there is clarity and a "level playing field" regarding television relay licences.

Senior officials from the company told the Joint Committee on Heritage and the Irish Language on Wednesday that there would be substantial benefits for the Irish economy and for the consumer if a "supportive environment" was provided by the Telecommunications Regulator's Office.

Princes Holdings - the MMDS operator which is 50 per cent owned by Independent Newspapers - is seeking to be allowed to transmit digital television services by the MMDS system when these become available.

RTE is seeking Government approval to form a strategic alliance so it can develop terrestrial digital television which would make 30 channels available nationwide.
