ISRAEL said Palestinian police shot at an Israeli forces jeep in the West Bank Ramallah self rule enclave yesterday but no one was injured.

"Shots fired from a Palestinian police roadblock in the city of Ramallah hit an Israeli jeep that was preparing to go out on a joint patrol in the city," an Israeli army spokeswoman said.

"In an initial investigation conducted by Maj Gen Gabi Ofir, "the Palestinian police representative said it was done by mistake."

She said Gen Ofir would raise the incident when he meets his Palestinian counterpart, Gen Haj Ismail. The meeting was expected to take place later yesterday and Israel said it would raise a number of infractions by Palestinian police.

Under interim peace deals, signed between the Palestine Liberation Organisation and Israel's previous government, that set up self rule in parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Palestinian and Israeli forces jointly patrol main highways.

The Likud Party leader, Mr Benjamin Netanyahu who ousted Mr Shimon Peres in Israel's elections on May 29th and who opposed the peace deals, said he will honour signed agreements. But so far he has not redeployed Israeli troops in the West Bank town of Hebron, as called for in a September deal signed in Washington, nor has he resumed final peace talks.

Tensions have also increased between the sides over Israel's sealing of the territories, imposed under Mr Peres after Islamic militant suicide bombers killed 59 people in February and March.

The closure bars tens of thousands of Palestinians from jobs in Israel.

The Palestinian President, Mr Yasser Arafat, arrived in Saudi Arabia yesterday to discuss prospects for Middle East peace in the wake of the Israeli elections.

Gulf news agencies said the PLO leader who arrived in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, would also hold talks on the self rule areas in light of Israeli closures.

An adviser said Mr Arafat would meet King Fahd, Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz and Defence Minister Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz to discuss developments since the Arab summit in Cairo last month.
