Nyireghaza, Hungary - The Hungarian Prime Minister, Mr Gyula Horn, delivered a fierce attack on centre-right rivals yesterday, ending his campaign for a Hungarian general election which political analysts say is too close to call.

The first round of voting takes place next Sunday, followed by a second stage on May 24th.

"The right wing is campaigning with lies and promises," the Socialist prime minister told a cheering crowd of 4,000 at a rally in a sports arena in this depressed north-eastern city "This is nothing more than a disguise for their yearning for power," Mr Horn said, directly attacking his main rival, the Fidesz Hungarian Civic Party, which is virtually level with the Socialists in opinion polls.
