Police in Derry came under attack last night after polling stations closed for voting in yesterday's Assembly elections.
The PSNI estimated some fifty petrol bombs were thrown as police came under attack when removing polling boxes from stations in Derry. An electoral official at one polling station needed a police escort to leave after a gang of youths smashed windows in the Shantallow Community Centre.
Four polling stations received paint damage.
According to reports, police vehicles being driven away from the scene were hit by at least two petrol bombs and a spokesman for the PSNI said 50 petrol bombs and a number of paint bombs and other missiles were thrown in "sporadic disturbances" across Derry.
There were no injuries reported and no arrests made. A number of police vehicles were damaged, he said.
Elsewhere, a police operation ended at Sion Mills following an overnight security alert on the Millmount Road in the Co Tyrone village.
Some twenty houses were evacuated after a number of phone calls were made warning of a suspicious object in the village. The device was later declared a hoax.
