A young man had his jaw and ankle broken in an alleged sectarian assault after police were attacked by a crowd in Northern Ireland last night.

Up to 20 people threw stones at officers in an estate in Ballymena, Co Antrim.

The gang of youths had been involved in disturbances and pelted passing cars near the Dunclug area of the town.

Although it was thought no one was injured, police later revealed there were investigating a report of an assault.

One youth was said to have suffered broken bones after being attacked by a gang. It is understood the victim was a Protestant teenager.

A PSNI spokeswoman said police are treating the alleged assault as a possible sectarian incident.
