Police said there was "no link" being made at present between the missing teenager and the remains, discovered yesterday by a couple picking mushrooms in a forest near Fleet, in Hampshire.

"We are keeping our mind completely open as to who it could possibly be," Detective Supt Alan Betts of Hampshire Police told reporters. Police said Amanda's parents had been informed of the discovery as a matter of routine policy.

It comes on the eve of the six-month anniversary of the schoolgirl's March 21st disappearance near Walton-on-Thames train station in Surrey.

Her parents, Mr Bob and Sally Dowler, marked the anniversary with an interview in which they acknowledged their daughter - known as Milly to friends and family - had likely been murdered.

Police do not know the sex or age of the remains found in Yateley Heath Forest, or how long they had been there.
