Police in Northern Ireland were today investigating the fatal shooting of a British soldier on an army base in County Derry.

The 21-year-old died following an incident last night at around 8.30 p.m. at Shackleton Barracks in Ballykelly.

One person has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the incident did not appear to be paramilitary related.

It is understood the victim was originally from England.A British army spokesman in Northern Ireland confirmed a police investigation wastaking place into a fatal shooting at Shackleton Barracks.

"Planning officer Lieutenant Colonel Watt has extended his sympathy to thefamily and close friends of the deceased," the spokesman said.

"As a police investigation is currently taking place, we will not commentfurther."
