Police investigating the racist killing of black teenager Anthony Walker in Liverpool arrested a third man on suspicion of murder today.

Merseyside police arrested two men at Liverpool's John Lennon airport on suspicion of Walker's murder last night.

A 23-year-old man was also arrested today.  Police gave no details of his detention.

Walker, an 18-year-old college student, was beaten to death with an axe by a group of three to four people last Friday. He was killed just minutes after he had been taunted with racist abuse while standing at a bus stop with his white girlfriend. The weapon was left embedded in his head when his body was found.

Police had previously said they wanted to talk to two local men, Michael Barton (17), and Paul Taylor (20), about the murder.

Barton is the younger brother of Manchester City footballer Joey Barton. The premier league player made a televised appeal for his brother to turn himself into police on Tuesday.

The murder of Walker, described as a devout Christian and model student, shocked the local community in the Huyton area of Merseyside and evoked memories of the 1993 racist killing of Stephen Lawrence.

Four other men held over the attack have been released on bail.
