Jakarta - Indonesian police tried to break into an underground bunker in the grounds of former president Suharto's home in Jakarta yesterday as part of their attempts to capture his fugitive son.

Mr Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra, Gen Suharto's youngest son, has been on the run since early November after fleeing an 18month jail term for corruption over an $11 million land scam.

"This is part of our effort to find Tommy," Police Commissioner Vito Karnafian said outside Gen Suharto's luxury bungalow in central Jakarta, without saying if police seriously expected Tommy to be in the bunker.
