Washington - The White House warned yesterday that the convictions of officers for torturing a Haitian immigrant in New York should send a "strong message" about police brutality.

On Tuesday, a federal jury convicted a police officer, Charles Schwarz (32), and acquitted three others of the beating and torture of Mr Abner Louima. In May, another officer, Justin Volpe (27), was imprisoned for life after pleaded guilty to violating Mr Louima's civil rights for beating and sodomising him with a broken broom handle in the same incident.

President Clinton yesterday met civil rights leaders and law enforcers to discuss brutality prevention measures.
