Gardaí in Limerick said yesterday they were still trying to contact relatives of a 28-year-old Polish man who died in a house fire on Saturday morning.

A Garda spokesman confirmed that the name of the victim would not be released until next of kin had been informed.

It is understood that formal identification of the Polish national has been delayed because of the extensive burns suffered by the victim.

The man's body was found in the ground floor sitting room where it is believed the fire started before quickly spreading to the rest of the house.

He was the sole occupant of the semi-detached house at the time of the fire. The alarm was raised at around 2.50am when people returning home from a night out spotted the house in flames at Lyredane Avenue, Woodview Park.

Three units of Limerick Fire Service remained at the scene for three hours as they battled to bring the blaze under control.

Members of the fire service using breathing apparatus found the man's badly-burned body in the living room area which was gutted in the blaze.

There was extensive smoke and heat damage to the rest of the house. An adjoining house was also evacuated.

Gardaí sealed off the area while a full technical examination was carried out to establish the cause of the blaze which is believed to have started accidentally.
