Shane P O'Reilly (Fianna Fáil) took the last seat in the Ballyjamesduff area in Cavan County Council, after he was elected on the fourth count with a vote of 1,458.

Other seats had been filled by Winston Bennet (Fine Gael), Philip Brady (Fianna Fail), Noel Connell (Sinn Féin) and Paddy Smith (Fine Gael).

His Fianna Fáil running mate and election first timer, Craig Lovett, with a final vote of 1,415, immediately called for a total recount. This was granted by the returning officer and the count came to a conclusion at midnight on Saturday.

All seats on the newly drawn Cavan-Belturbet six-seater were filled on the eighth count after Fianna Fáil’s Sean Smith was elected and Sinn Féin’s Eugene Greenan was elected. The other four seats were filled by Madeline Argue (Fine Gael), Damien Brady (Sinn Féin), John Paul Feeley (Fianna Fáil) and Peter McVitty (Fine Gael).

Electoral reforms have seen Cavan redrawn into just three electoral areas, down from four, and the number of councilors reduced to 18 from 25.
