Cork County Council co-opts six members to replace new TDs

Anti-Austerity Alliance yet to decide on whom to co-opt on to council to replace Mick Barry

Margaret Murphy O’Mahony (Fianna Fáil), the first woman to be elected in Cork South West, has been replaced on Cork County Council by Gillian Coughlan

Six new members have been co-opted on to Cork County Council to replace councillors who won seats in the general election. Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West Aindrias Moynihan, who has followed his father Donal into Dáil Éireann, has been replaced on the council by his sister, Gobnait.

In Cork East, new Fianna Fáil TD Kevin O’Keeffe, who follows his father Ned to Leinster House, is replaced by his sister, Deirdre O’Brien. In west Cork, Fianna Fáil’s Margaret Murphy O’Mahony, who became the first woman to be elected in Cork South West, has been replaced by Gillian Coughlan.

Also in west Cork, newly elected Independent TD Michael Collins from Schull has been replaced on the council by his brother, Danny. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin has replaced newly elected Cork South Central TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire with Eoghan Jeffers, while Danielle Twomey has replaced Pat Buckley, who has been elected as a TD in Cork East.

The Anti-Austerity Alliance is yet to decide on whom to co-opt on to Cork City Council to replace Mick Barry, who was elected in Cork North Central.
