Former Fianna Fáil TD, Minister and MEP Paddy Lalor of Co Laois has died aged 90.
The former Laois hurler was an elected representative for Laois/Offaly for 33 years, serving as minister for post and telegraphs in 1969-1970, and minister for industry in 1970 — 1973.
He served as chief whip in the 1977- 79 government under the late taoiseach Jack Lynch, and was later elected as an MEP for Leinster and served until 1994. During that time he held the position of vice president of the European Parliament.
Mr Lalor died on Friday. Predeceased by his wife Myra, he is survived by his son Joe and daughters Frances, Helen and Veronica.
Mr Lalor will be buried in Abbleyleix following requiem mass at the Church of the Most Holy Rosary in Abbeyleix on Monday at 11am.
Paying tribute to Mr Lalor, Fianna Fáil leader Micheal Martin said he had a very long and dedicated career of public service .
“Paddy had a very distinguished political career and represented the people of Laois /Offaly with great pride. He was a great GAA supporter and played for the Laois hurling team in 1949 .
“He often spoke about how they beat Kilkenny to get to the final butunfortunately Tipperary beat Laois in there final.”
Expending his condolences to Mr Lalor’s children, Mr Martin said “my thoughts and prayers are with them at this sad time”.
