Minister of State Kathleen Lynch discharged from hospital

Junior health minister returns home as treatment for sepicaemia continues

Minister of State for Health Kathleen Lynch is recovering at home in Cork following her release from hospital after bring treated for septicaemia.

Ms Lynch was discharged from Cork University Hospital where she had been flown by helicopter after she became unwell in Donegal last week.

“She’s convalescing at home, she will be for a few weeks. She is on a lot of medication including antibiotics and she will be for a few weeks but everything is under control,” a spokesman for Ms Lynch said.

Ms Lynch was visiting Letterkenny General Hospital, parts of which were closed due to flooding, when she complained of feeling weak.

“It came on her all of a sudden, but she was in the right place at the right time and the doctors in the hospital were able to help her straight away,” the spokesman said.

Ms Lynch was transferred to the intensive care unit at CUH by helicopter on Wednesday night.

She spent the bank holiday weekend at CUH and was released on Monday afternoon.

She had been scheduled to attend the MacGill Summer School in Glenties, Co Donegal over the weekend, but was forced to cancel her appearance.

“It was a bit of a fright. But she was treated for the same thing last year so she is more wary of it. It’s dangerous, so she has to be careful of it,” the spokesman said.

Ms Lynch was treated for a more severe bout of septicaemia - a potentially deadly infection of the blood - in Beaumont Hospital last year.

The Minister is scheduled to visit doctors later this week and will be resting at home for the next two weeks at least.

"The doctors are happy that the infection has been brought under control. But it's really a long term underlying issue that needs to be addressed," said mayor of Cork Catherine Clancy, who is Ms Lynch's sister-in-law.
