A total of 28 sudden infant deaths were recorded in Ireland last year. This compared to 32 in 1995 and 36 in 1994, the Minister for Health, Mr Cowen, said.

In reply to Mr Jim O'Keeffe (FG, Cork South West) he said a national sudden death infant register in existence in 1991 had provided valuable information on such deaths.
