A cyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a car in Tallaght, Co Dublin this afternoon.

A 32-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident which occurred on the N81 near the junction at Fortunestown Road at approximately 2.15pm.

The motorist was the sole occupant of the car which collided with the 36-year-old male cyclist who was taken to Tallaght hospital for treatment.

Eighty-one people have died in road traffic collisions since the start of the year, including five cyclists, eight motorcyclists, 20 pedestrians, 33 drivers and 15 passengers.
