A motion seeking the re-admission of Deputy Beverly Cooper-Flynn to the Fianna Fail Parliamentary Party nine months after she lost the whip for voting against a Government move of censure against her father is to be considered by the party's TDs and Senators today.
The Mayo TD was expelled after she voted against a motion to force her father, the former EU Commissioner, Mr Padraig Flynn, to make a full statement on allegations that he received a cheque from builder Tom Gilmartin while he was Minister for the Environment in 1989.
The Irish Times has learned that Ms Cooper-Flynn has had informal discussions with the Taoiseach about her re-entry to the Parliamentary Party in recent weeks. She was one of a group of Fianna Fail deputies who had dinner with the Taoiseach last night as part of his recent drive to improve communications with backbenchers.
Ms Cooper-Flynn told The Irish times she had heard whispers in recent weeks that her re-entry to the Parliamentary Party was imminent. "I would be delighted to be back as part of the Fianna Fail Parliamentary Party. That is my wish," she said.
Ms Flynn confirmed she met the Taoiseach in recent weeks.
It is understood the Government Chief Whip, the Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach, Mr Seamus Brennan, will receive a letter this morning from Ms Cooper-Flynn requesting her readmission to the Parliamentary Party. The matter is then likely to be put to a meeting by the party chairman, Dr Rory O'Hanlon. The motion is not likely to be opposed.
