The Taoiseach is happy to travel by air on January 1st, 2000, despite warnings of navigational chaos due to a computer crash.

Mr Ahern was replying to Mr Ivan Yates (FG, Wexford) who asked if he was aware of the widespread concern about air navigation equipment, all of which was computerised. "Will the Taoiseach take a flight on January 1st next in full confidence?"

Mr Ahern said he was not going to become involved in that debate as he did not have responsibility for Y2000 issues. The matter had been addressed previously at Question Times by the Minister for Public Enterprise, Ms O'Rourke.

"Does that mean the Taoiseach will take his chances?" asked Mr Yates.

"I take more chances than that with my life most of the time," Mr Ahern replied.

Mr Yates observed: "We know that. We know how fast and loose the Taoiseach can be."

Mr Ahern said: "I consider it an easy challenge."

The Labour deputy leader, Mr Brendan Howlin, remarked that all the Taoiseach was doing was risking his life.

"I hope he has a soft landing," said Mr Yates.

Mr Ahern said air navigation, as well as many other areas, had been extensively examined.
