Fianna Fáil last night selected councillors James Browne and Malcolm Byrne to contest the general election in the five-seater Wexford constituency.
More than 350 party members attended the selection convention in Enniscorthy.
Mr Browne, a barrister from Enniscorthy, is the son of the outgoing Fianna Fáil TD, John Browne. He was elected to Enniscorthy Town Council in 2009 and to Wexford County Council in 2014.
Mr Byrne, head of communications with the Higher Education Authority, topped the poll in last year’s local elections in the Gorey area and has served as chairman of Wexford County Council. He is a law graduate of UCD and was previously chief executive of the national community games organisation.
In Clare, Fianna Fáil has confirmed the addition of Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy to the ticket. She joins Timmy Dooley TD and Michael McDonagh as candidates.
The chairman of the FF constituencies committee, Michael Moynihan, said: “Fianna Fáil is confident we have an extremely strong ticket in Clare. Our candidates will be working together in the weeks and months ahead to maximise the party’s vote with a view to winning two seats.”
