Slightly more than half of Danes are in favour of the European Union's eastwards enlargement, according to an opinion poll published today in the Jyllands-Posten.

The poll in the conservative daily, which questioned around 1,000 people, found 53 per cent in favour of expansion with 27 per cent against. The remainder were undecided.

However, 38 per cent of those questioned said they thought enlargement would have a negative or very negative effect on the Danish economy.

The issue is at the top of the agenda of the current Danish EU presidency and will dominate the December Copenhagen summit. That meeting is expected to approve expansion of the bloc to up to 25 members by 2004, depending on the outcome of the October 19th Nice Treaty referendum in Ireland.
