US: On the eve of today's primary, Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts holds a three-point lead over Mr Howard Dean, according to a Reuters/MSNBC/Zogby poll published yesterday.

The poll showed Senator John Edwards of South Carolina jumping three points to 12 per cent, one behind Gen Wesley Clark, with Senator Joseph Lieberman at 9 per cent.

"There is no question that the race has tightened up," pollster John Zogby said, referring to earlier polls that put Kerry well ahead of the former Vermont governor. "Dean stopped the bleeding in the middle of the week and he has slowly regained some of the support he had lost."

However a USA Today/Gallup poll yesterday showed Kerry with an 11 point lead over Dean, who was the choice of 40 per cent of New Hampshire Democrats a month ago. In the poll, 56 per cent of Democrats said Kerry had the best chance of beating Bush, with Dean second at 16 per cent.
