Green Party TD John Gormley has warned the proposed renovation of the Poolbeg Peninsula in Dublin's Ringsend may bring in "massive traffic gridlock" if the necessary public transport infrastructure is not in place.
Mr Gormley said: "The Poolbeg plan will be one of the major development initiatives for Dublin in the coming years, and it is vital for the locality and for the city at large that we get this one right."
Dublin City Council's plan for the area includes residential and office units in five to seven-storey buildings, public parks and coastal amenities.
The project will take 10 years to complete at an estimated cost of €1.5 billion.
Mr Gormley said: "The new development will create massive demand in terms of transport and if the necessary public transport infrastructure isn't put in place then the only possible outcome is massive gridlock."
He claimed that a proposed new bridge across the mouth of the Dodder, which is supposed to be for public transport only, could quickly become a major route for motor traffic.
"The only way to stop this is to ensure that rail or Luas links are in place," he said.
The Green Party will make their submission to Dublin City Council on the proposed plan for the Poolbeg peninsula on Wednesday.
