Washington - Population growth is declining globally but remains high in those countries that are "least able to support their growing millions," according to a study released yesterday. "Rapid population growth in the poorest countries of the world remains the most pressing global demographic problem despite a decline in annual increments in human numbers," the Population Institute said.

In its 1997 World Population Overview, the institute attributed the global decline in growth to widespread acceptance of family planning, delays in marriage and an increase in death rates.
