An inquest into the death of a garda who died during an attempted bank raid in Co Laois was adjourned today.

An inquest into the death of a garda who died during an attempted bank raid in Co Laois was adjourned today.

Detective Sergeant John Eiffe of the Garda Surveillance Unit, died in Abbeyleix, on December 7, 2001.

He was hit by a bullet mistakenly fired by a Garda colleague.

The inquest heard the evidence of six Garda witnesses when it was brought to the attention of the coroner that two men convicted in connection with the attempted bank raid had lodged appeals against their convictions.

Coroner Mr Eugene O'Connor said he had no alternative but to adjourn the inquest and listed it for June 10th for mention only.
