Non-league Portmarnock have knocked Dundalk out of the FAI Cup. The Dublin team scraped a 1-0 win in today’s third round tie thanks to a first half goal from Keith Bruen.

The match, played behind closed doors at Baldonnel, had been postponed five times before today’s meeting but Portamrnock will feel it was well worth the wait.

The decisive goal arrived in the 34th minute.Portmarnock were awarded a penalty only to see Greg Bolton’s strike turned behind by John Connolly in the Dundalk goal.

But the first division leaders failed to pick up Bruen from the resulting corner and the defender headed home from six yards to send his team into the quarter-finals.

Predictably, Dundalk piled forward in the second halflooking for an equaliser but were unable to find a way through a resolute rearguard and Portmarnock held on for a famous victory. They will now meet Longford Town in the quarter-finals.
