A two-week exhibition of photographic portraits of women from around the world was launched in Dublin yesterday to mark International Women's Day on March 8th. The portraits, taken by Verona-based photographer Ursula Swoboda, have been brought together under the title My Name is Woman.

Ms Swoboda travels alone, mostly in Asian and Arab countries, in her efforts to capture the lives of different women throughout the world.

The exhibition is being hosted by the Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI) at the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre. It was launched by South Africa's ambassador to Ireland, Priscilla Jana, and the ICI's Sr Stanislaus Kennedy yesterday. Sr Stanislaus Kennedy said the council had brought the exhibition to Ireland because it is a "magnificent human study" of women from different cultures - many of whom are represented in Ireland today. "It presents an opportunity to focus on the gender perspective in relation to migration, and it will give anyone who visits an insight into the strength of women and their lives, both globally and in Irish society today," she said.

The free exhibition runs until March 11th at the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, Foster Place, Dublin.
