Portuguese police released the only suspect in the case of missing British four-year-old Madeleine McCann today after questioning him for more than eight hours.

However, Briton Robert Murat, 33, who lives in the same resort in the tourist region of the Algarve where the blonde-haired girl went missing more than two months ago, remains a suspect,  police chief inspector Olegario de Sousa said.

"He was released and remains a suspect in the case," he confirmed.

Sousa did not say whether police were closer to finding Madeleine, despite reports of dozens of possible sightings of the girl ever since she went missing on May 3.

"Obviously, we will be listening to all people connected to the case throughout the week," Sousa added.

Murat declined to comment on the investigation when he left the police station in Portimao.
