A man on bail over drugs charges was shot dead in Northern Ireland after a death threat was issued against a man who survived the shooting, it emerged today.

Adrian Porter (34) died in a hail of bullets fired through the window of his home at Conlig near Bangor, Co Down. The RUC said Mr Porter had a criminal record and links with loyalist paramilitaries.

The second man, sitting at a table just feet away, was injured but not badly. Loyalist paramilitaries are believed to have been involved.

Two gunmen fired the shots, one with an automatic rifle.

A member of North Down district council claimed the murder could have been a fallout over drugs.

Mr Stewart Currie of the Progressive Unionist Party claimed: "This could be part of a turf war or people within the drugs trade squabbling amongst themselves."

The RUC confirmed they had investigated a telephone death threat against the 21-year-old man who survived.

A caller to UTV on Monday, claiming to represent a loyalist group, said the man had 48 hours to get out of Northern Ireland or "summary justice would be carried out".

An RUC spokesman said officers later went to inform the man of the threat and were told he was in England.
