Two postal workers employed at the Post Office sorting office in Derry have been granted special leave following the delivery of written death threats to their homes in the city last week-end.

The two workers, both of them Catholic, received the threats last Saturday.

The threats were contained in sympathy cards on which "U.V.F.", "R.I.P." and "Fenian Scumbags" had been written.

Two investigations are underway into the incidents. A spokesperson for the PSNI confirmed yesterday that the two letters have been received by officers investigating the incidents and the letters have been forwarded to forensic scientists in an attempt to determine their source.
