Athletics:Asafa Powell clocked a wind-assisted 9.81seconds to win the 100metres as the IAAF Diamond League got under way in Doha this evening. The Jamaican former world record holder went even quicker in his heat, recording a wind-aided 9.75sec at the inaugural meeting in the series at the Qatar Sports Club.

Powell was one of five to go under the 10 second mark in the final, which was helped by a following wind of 2.3m per second.

Another Jamaican Nesta Carter was second in 9.88sec and American Travis Padgett third in 9.92sec.

Two more Jamaicans, Michael Frater and Lerone Clarke, were fourth and fifth in 9.94 and 9.98 respectively.

“I’m quite happy with my performance. It is a very good time for the first race of the season,” said Powell.
