The Premiership will earn £178 million sterling from overseas broadcast rights over the next three years.

The deal was announced after today's meeting of Premier League chairmen, which also set a deadline of the end of April for talks on a new sponsor to be finalised.

The deal for overseas broadcast rights was agreed with a consortium made up of Canal+, Rupert Murdoch's Newscorp, TWI and Octagon CSI.

It is considerably more than the £98 million sterling agreed for the previous three seasons but there have been reports that the Premier League was expecting more money.

FA Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "This is an exceptionally good arrangement for all parties.

"After lengthy negotiations we have concluded a deal that recognises the enormous global strength of the FA Premier League.

"The exposure this gives us will enhance the reputation of the League and its member clubs throughout the world."

At the meeting, the chairmen were told that two companies - one believed to be Sony - remain in talks about being the league's new sponsors.
