London - Confusion last night surrounded an unorthodox intervention by the British Deputy Prime Minister, Mr John Prescott, in the case of some trainee Catholic priests who were refused entry to Britian.
It seemed likely that the priests, from Africa and Asia, would be admitted, after officials reportedly indicated that it was "extremely likely" the decision to exclude them would soon be reversed.
Mr Prescott rang BBC Radio 4's Today programme after it reported the priests' plight to declare that he would personally ask for the papers on what appeared to be a possible injustice. The Foreign Office said later the decision was being urgently reviewed - an apparent victory for Mr Prescott - but later added that it had first asked for a re-examination last week.
