Det Garda Ben O'Sullivan and the late Det Garda Jerry McCabe are to be awarded Scott gold medals for bravery at the Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary, today. Det Garda McCabe's posthumous medal will be accepted by his widow, Ann. Both men were shot by an IRA gang in a failed raid on a post office lorry in Adare, Co Limerick, on June 7th, 1996. Det Garda McCabe died instantly and Det Garda O'Sullivan was seriously wounded.
Det Garda O'Sullivan was awarded the Scott gold medal in 1994 for arresting a man with a loaded shotgun at Childers Road, Limerick, in January 1991.
Sgt Andy Callanan, who died from burns after a firebomb attack at Tallaght Garda station, Co Dublin, will also receive a posthumous Scott gold medal.
