There is an enormous commitment across the country to building an inclusive society, President Michael D Higgins said today.
The President was speaking at the launch of Better Together, a campaign to build support for community and non-profit organisations across Ireland and to encourage voluntary activity.
"The quality of life in our society, and the ultimate health of our communities, depends on the willingness of people to become involved and active – active on behalf of themselves, their families, their communities and those in our society who may be vulnerable or at risk," he said.
Developed by The Wheel, a national body representing over 900 charities, and supported by the EBS, the Better Together campaign gives community groups and charities a chance to advertise their activities and attract new supports through short online videos posted on the web site www.bettertogether.ie
People are being asked to visit the site and vote for their favourite videos. The 30 causes that attract the most votes will be shortlisted for three prizes of €3000. Donations can also be made online.
The campaign is also asking for votes for people who make extraordinary contributions to good causes in a voluntary capacity. The winner will receive €1000 to donate to their favourite cause.
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on December 6th.
Deirdre Garvey, chief executive of The Wheel, said charities and voluntary groups were facing challenging times.
"Not only is the demand for their services increasing, but their income levels are dropping. The Better Together campaign aims to turn the tide on this and strengthen local groups by showing the public the amazing work happening in their communities and what they can do to help."
