The President Mary McAleese is to resume public engagements on Thursday after being discharged from hospital this morning after being admitted on Sunday night.

She had been feeling unwell for a number of days before she went to the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin where she was diagnosed with an infection and given antibiotics intravenously.

A spokeswoman for the President said Mrs McAleese stayed overnight as "a precautionary measure".

"The President was discharged from hospital this morning and is doing well. She's back at the Áras and she is resting at the moment," the spokeswoman said.

Official engagements yesterday and today have been rescheduled. Mrs McAleese will be unable to attend the opening of an art exhibition in Dublin tomorrow evening and a reception she was hosting for New Zealand prime minister Helen Clarke earlier that afternoon has been cancelled.

Mrs McAleese will resume her work on Thursday with a trip to Co Tyrone were she has four engagements.

Meanwhile, Ms Clark's visit to Ireland has been curtailed by a day. She was due to arrive tomorrow but will instead arrive on Thursday the previous day's engagements have been cancelled.
